After Report: Evening Academic Lecture with Prof. Gary Bull and Prof. Jeff Sayer

The International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Local Committee recently hosted a captivating evening featuring Prof. Gary Bull and Prof. Jeff Sayer. The event delved into discussions on Carbon Offset Markets, Nature-Based Solutions, and Forests, offering attendees a wealth of knowledge and insights.

Location: Hybrid (Forest Science Centre [FSC] 1220 or via Zoom)

Prof. Gary Bull’s Lecture

Prof. Gary Bull, with expertise in carbon accounting, finance, and logistics along the supply chain, provided a comprehensive overview of Carbon Offset Markets. Drawing from his collaborations with organizations like WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol, Sustainable Biomass Program, and others, Prof. Bull shared intriguing insights into carbon offset projects worldwide, including the Kariba Project in Africa and the BMO Voluntary Carbon Market.

Prof. Jeff Sayer’s Lecture

Prof. Jeff Sayer, an ecologist with a career spanning African savannas to Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Thailand, shared his experiences in forest conservation. His lecture touched on the challenges of reconciling the needs of local communities with global environmental conservation, emphasizing the importance of addressing extreme poverty for sustainable forest management.

Participants

We are thrilled to have received 188 responses from participants, including undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students from diverse faculties at UBC. The audience spanned faculties from Forestry to Sauder School of Business, Education, and Economics, along with faculty and staff at UBC, and other UBC-affiliated groups. More than 40 people attended in person at FSC 1220, with an additional 30 joining us online.

Unveiling Our Distinctive New Logo

We are thrilled to announce the official launch of our new IFSA-UBC Local Committee logo during a recent academic lecture. This distinctive logo is the creative work of Yawei Wei, a dedicated master’s student in Forestry at the University of British Columbia.

Diversity in Unity

Adding a delightful touch to the academic seminar, we provided light refreshments and snacks from ten different countries. Attendees indulged in treats from Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, China, Indonesia, India, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, England, and Belgium, fostering a sense of global unity.
