Leadership one-on-one: Muh Syukron

Vice-President of Media

Syu is originally from Indonesia, where he developed a deep connection with the beautiful natural landscapes. This connection made him realize how incredible and complex nature can be, with all its challenges and opportunities. Syu is passionate about making positive changes in the world, especially when it comes to the environment and society. Right now, he is in his second year of a Ph.D. program in Forestry at the University of British Columbia. His interest lies in environmental governance, focusing on how technology, resource management, and taking care of the environment all come together, especially in forestry and agriculture through a social lens. Currently, he is diving headfirst into exploring sustainability in the global and Indonesian palm oil industry. Outside academic work, he enjoys exploring food, snapping photos, and checking out new places while traveling.

Q1. For you, what makes IFSA-UBC different from other student organizations?

MS: IFSA stands out due to the incredible diversity within our members. Hailing from countries like Canada, Brazil, Africa, Indonesia, China, and more, our collective backgrounds contribute to the robustness of IFSA. This cultural mix provides unique perspectives that prove invaluable in helping IFSA achieve its goals. As a network of international students in forestry, we not only enrich our diversity but also act as a vital bridge between local and international forestry students, as well as connecting with academics and professionals committed to making a positive impact on our planet. This diverse and connected approach is what makes IFSA truly special.

Q2. What do you value in your colleagues at IFSA-UBC?

MS: To me, IFSA feels like a family – a welcoming one at that. From the very beginning, they embraced me, making me comfortable and proud to be part of the team. Their readiness to lend a helping hand is commendable, and their dedication, spirit, commitment, and friendliness are qualities I strive to emulate. Despite juggling academics and other responsibilities, they always find time for IFSA, creating a positive atmosphere that makes staying with IFSA a fantastic experience.

Q3. What role do you see faculty and staff have in the IFSA-UBC experience?

MS: Some of them are like IFSA ‘parents,’ offering guidance and mentorship to shape our student-led organization. The advisory board and Faculty of Forestry members have been crucial in running IFSA events, particularly academic seminars. Additionally, the support from Forestry staff (and other UBC staff) acts as a bridge between IFSA and the UBC community, ensuring the success of our events. We truly appreciate their ongoing support!

Q4. What hobbies or interests do you have outside of your role as VP of Media?

MS: In my free time, I indulge in photography, capturing outdoor landscapes, architectural wonders, and the beauty of flora and fauna. While I’m no pro, I’m constantly honing my photography skills. I also have a passion for cooking spicy Indonesian cuisine and street food, and I’ve dabbled in baking, with brownies and Swiss roll cakes being my favorites. And, to add a bit of melody to my life, I enjoy singing, even if it occasionally gives my housemates a headache.

Q5. How do you handle stress and pressure in your personal life?

MS: Movies and music are my go-to stress busters. Horror movies, in particular, help me release tension with a good scream. Although I can’t explain the science behind it, this ritual works wonders for me. Music, especially pop, is another escape – singing along lifts my mood and recharges my energy.

Q6. How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance while pursuing a PhD and serving as VP of Media?

MS: Balancing a doctoral program, part-time work, and VP Media responsibilities requires a strategic approach. I dedicate my weekdays to academic and work commitments, reserving evenings for self-care activities like going to the gym, spending time with friends, or watching movies. Avoiding work on weekends helps me recharge, ensuring I maintain a healthy work-life balance crucial for both physical and mental well-being.

Q7. What personal experiences led you to pursue a role in media?

MS: My involvement with the University of Missouri International Student Council (MISC) media team was a turning point. Creating content for various platforms honed my skills in crafting appealing posts, stories, and infographics. Coupled with my passion for photography, which proved beneficial in documenting MISC events, these experiences paved the way for my role in IFSA. I believe my growing knowledge and skills will contribute positively to IFSA-UBC, much like they did for MISC.
