YW: UBC has a unique blend of global networks in forestry and many related areas, such as environmental science and sustainability. Being part of IFSA-UBC, we have unparalleled opportunities to learn and grow within this rich academic setting. Our connection to the wider IFSA network also entitles us to diverse perspectives and global collaboration opportunities. IFSA-UBC also offers an array of diverse activities, encompassing academic workshops, student presentation nights, and field trips, which are designed to cater to both professional development and personal interests. This combination of academic resources, global networking, focused expertise, and a community-oriented approach contributes to the unique position and impact of IFSA-UBC in the realm of forestry and environmental studies.
Q2. How do you like to recharge?
YW: As a certified forest bathing guide and forest therapy practitioner, I find my most effective way to recharge is by immersing myself in the natural environment. The practice of forest bathing involves taking in the forest atmosphere through a mindful and intentional presence, which I find incredibly rejuvenating. I enjoy walking my dog along the coastline or through the forest, observing the intricacies of nature, from the patterns of leaves to the sounds of birds, watching the clouds over the mountains across the coast, and looking out for seals popping their heads up in the sea. This connection with nature soothes my mind and provides a profound sense of peace and grounding.
Q3. What hobbies or interests do you have?
YW: I am passionate about the outdoors, particularly hiking with my dog. Exploring new trails is something that brings me immense joy and satisfaction. There’s something special about discovering new paths, each with its unique landscapes and challenges. My dog’s companionship adds an extra layer of enjoyment to these adventures, as we both appreciate the beauty of nature. Alongside hiking, I am also interested in nature photography, capturing the stunning vistas and intimate details of the environments we explore. This hobby complements my love for hiking and allows me to preserve and share the beauty of the natural world.
Q4: How do you handle stress and pressure in your personal life?
YW: In managing stress and pressure in my personal life, I rely on a combination of practical strategies and mindfulness techniques. I prioritize physical activity, like hiking and walking my dog, which helps release tension and improve mental clarity. Mindfulness and meditation are also key components of my stress management routine. By dedicating time to these practices, I cultivate a sense of calm and centeredness, which is invaluable during stressful periods.
Q5. What do you hope will be your lasting impact at IFSA-UBC?
YW: At IFSA-UBC, I aim to foster a stronger sense of community and belonging among the members. By nurturing a supportive and inclusive environment, I hope to ensure that every member feels valued and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and skills.
Q6. If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
YW: If I could choose a superpower, it would be the ability to instantly teleport to any location in the world. The idea of being able to explore and appreciate the beauty of our planet without the constraints of travel time is truly fascinating. With this power, I could experience diverse cultures, marvel at natural wonders, and witness the incredible diversity of life that exists across different continents, all in an instant. It would not only satisfy my curiosity and love for adventure but also allow me to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the world we live in. This ability to instantly connect with any part of the world would be a remarkable way to broaden my perspectives and experiences.
Q7. How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?
YW: Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for overall well-being and productivity. My approach is to work hard during the weekdays, focusing fully on my professional responsibilities. This involves dedicating myself to tasks, managing my time efficiently, and striving for high performance in my work. By doing so, I ensure that all necessary tasks are completed within the week, which helps in minimizing work-related stress. When the weekend arrives, I shift gears to ‘play hard.’ This is my time to relax, engage in hobbies, spend time with friends, and enjoy leisure activities. Whether it’s outdoor adventures, exploring new places, or simply unwinding at home with my dog, the weekends are dedicated to recharging my batteries and indulging in activities that bring me joy and relaxation.
